Summary
This article reviews the role of collagen, coenzyme Q10 and polysaccharides in anti-ageing skin through dietary and cosmetic applications. Collagen consists of three left-handed polypeptide chains forming a superhelix, with glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline as the main amino acids. It can promote skin anti-aging by participating in collagen synthesis, reducing oxidative stress, and inhibiting inflammation, while cross-linked collagen materials enriched with active compounds show potential for use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Coenzyme Q10, a mitochondrial antioxidant, reduces oxidative stress, increases cellular energy production and has been shown to improve skin smoothness and elasticity. Dietary polysaccharides, such as those derived from mushrooms and plants, exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, promoting moisture retention in the skin and reducing oxidative damage. These compounds inhibit collagen degradation, protect against free radicals and activate cellular pathways that improve skin regeneration. Together, these substances show potential in slowing down the ageing process through both internal supplementation and topical application. The article highlights the importance of diet for skin health, emphasising that a well-balanced intake of these compounds can mitigate the effects of ageing.
