Summary
Introduction. Body mass index (BMI) allows to determine whether the patient has a normal body weight, is overweight or obese. A good additional measurements are: waist-to-hip ratio or body composition analysis.
Aim. The aim of the study is to examine the relationship between body mass index and the percentage of body fat in a group of people subjected to body mass composition analysis.
Material and method. The questionnaire study was conducted in the group of 50 persons (34 females and 14 males) aged over 45 years of age. The questionnaire included 25 questions.
Results. In the study group, only 16 respondents had a normal BMI (14 women and 2 men; 32%). Almost half of the respondents (22 people - 14 women and 8 men; 44%) are overweight, and 12 respondents (8 women and 4 men; 24%) are obese. The study also assessed the amount of visceral fat, 29 respondents (58%) had a correct result - not exceeding 10. The remaining respondents (21 people, 42%) had a level of visceral fat above the norm.
Conclusions. The BMI index allows for a quick and easy assessment of body weight, but it is not a perfect one. Body mass composition analysis with determination of fat percentage and visceral fat level are a good complement to BMI. The percentage of overweight and obese patients is alarmingly high.
