Summary
Introduction. Lipid barriers used in the study of percutaneous penetration of active substances allow for the simplification and shortening of the experiment; they are easy to obtain and standardize and, unlike the research conducted using human or animal material, do not raise ethical doubts.
Aim. The research aimed to check the usefulness of lipid membranes with an organized liquid crystal structure, analogous to the stratum corneum occurring in the intercellular space in the study of the permeation of active substances.
Materials and methods. The research was carried out on a homologous series of six esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. The experiments were carried out in Flynn diffusion cells. With lipid membranes and with prepared pig skin. The concentration of parabens was 0.5 µmol/ml. UV-VIS spectrophotometry was used to determine the amount of permeant in the acceptor chamber.
Results and conclusions. It was found that the correlation coefficient between the permeation rates for both membranes is very high. This indicates the full usefulness of lipid membranes for determining the influence of cosmetic composition on the bioavailability of active substances. For both membranes, the values of the permeation coefficients correlate with the lipophilicity of substances, assuming a parabolic shape.
